KAKA'AKO WATERFRONT CONCEPTUAL MASTER PLAN
Location: Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. Client: State of Hawaii. Project Team: Helber Hastert & Kimura Planners (Wimberley Allison Tong & Goo Architects). Conceptual Design Lead: Rick Phillips, AICP, RA. Date: 1989.
Description: This project combined an overall land use plan and policies, a detailed urban design master plan, and complete sets of urban design and development guidelines for a major portion of Honolulu’s inner-city Kaka’ako district. The plan is guiding Kaka’ako in gradual transition from traditional industrial uses into a future of environmentally-sustainable high density urban mixed-use. The plan includes a mixture of parks, recreation corridors, canals, lagoons, public beaches, pedestrian friendly streets, and innovative public transit, with proposals for richly layered redevelopment combining residential, commercial, and institutional uses in close proximity.
