CALTRAIN – SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO GATEWAY
Location:  South San Francisco, California.  Client:  City of South San Francisco.  Project Team:  HNTB Corporation.  Conceptual Planning, Urban Design:  Rick Phillips, RA.  Design Team:  Patrick Sheehan.  Status:  Visioning study completed, 2010.
Description:  Visioning study of city-funded public spaces supporting new Caltrain station (also designed by Rick Phillips), including signature downtown entry plaza, sky-lit pedestrian/bicycle tunnel under freeway and rail corridor, intermodal transit center, and provisions for public art and future transit-oriented development.  Public passage under rail corridor is key City strategy to reunite historic downtown with urban district cut-off by freeway construction in the 1950’s. Feature of visioning process was "working" scale model of evolving design, used in staff workshops and presentations before City Council and other agencies.
